Where are the godly?

Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth! (Psalm 12:1 NLT)

The words of the Psalmist David could very well have been spoken in this very day and age. When we look at our world today, we find that godly, righteous; honest men are few and far between. Godliness and righteousness are not popular terms today. Infact, not many people today are concerned about living a godly or righteous life. Selfishness, wickedness, inordinate ambition is the order of the day.

But the Word of God is clear about how God reacts to ungodliness and wickedness. Though we have a merciful God, He is righteous and holy and will not overlook that which is contrary to His nature. Throughout the Bible we see how God dealt with ungodliness and wickedness among His people. For example, we read in Genesis, “Now the Lord observed the extent of the people’s wickedness, and He saw that all their thoughts were consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry He had made them. It broke His heart. And the Lord said, “I will completely wipe out this human race that I have created. Yes, and I will wipe out all the animals and birds too. I am sorry I ever made them” But Noah found favour with the Lord” (Genesis 6:5-8 NLT)

Again the Book of Genesis tells us that after God had heard reports about the people of Sodom and Gomorrah and how extremely evil and wicked they were, “Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulphur from the heavens on Sodom and Gomorrah. He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, eliminating all life, people, plants and animals alike (Genesis 19:24-25 NLT).

Our God has not changed. He is still the same. If He hated ungodliness then, He hates it now. But note that God always had someone who remained godly, righteous, faithful. In spite of the wickedness that prevailed in his time, the Bible says that Noah found favour with God. Lot was spared from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. During the period of the Judges, when God’s people did what was right in their own eyes, God had those who were different, those He could trust to place over the people.

Friend, where do you stand? Are you striving to live for God or not? The Bible says we should choose this day, who we will serve. Chose to live a godly life because it pays.
Remember the Bible says, “If my people which are called my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV)

Prayer:

Lord, you desire that all men may come to know you and serve you. You are calling us to live a godly life, a life that is pleasing to you. May that be our desire. May every wicked way, every selfish way be far from us. May we hate every way that does not glorify you. Mold us and make us to be the people that you desire us to be in Jesus Mighty Name. Amen. And Amen.
