He has your life in His hand

For what hope has the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? Does God listen to his cries when distress comes upon him. (Job 27: 8 & 9)

In the Book of Luke Jesus talks about Lazarus, a beggar, covered with sores, who was laid daily at the gate of a certain rich man. As he lay at the gate starving, his desire was to have the crumbs that fell off the rich man’s table but the rich man did not even acknowledge his presence. Lazarus dies and we are told that angels came and carried him to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man too died and was buried.

The Bible tells us that when the rich man looked up from hell, he saw Lazarus in the bosom of Abraham and asked Abraham to send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and cool his tongue. Abraham reminds him that while on earth he enjoyed a good life while Lazarus had a hard life and now it was Lazarus' turn to enjoy. Abraham adds that there is a wide gulf between where they are and hell, where the rich man was, and no one can cross that gulf. The rich man then pleads with Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers not to make the same mistakes he made so they do not end up in hell. Abraham tells him they have Moses and the Prophets and they should listen to them.

The rich man was too busy enjoying his riches. He had no time for God and the ways of God were far from his thoughts. That is why he could see Lazarus sitting at his gate each day, hungry and not be concerned. There are many people today like the rich man. They are busy enjoying life, but giving no thought to the One who enables them to enjoy life. They forget that there is One who has their life in His hand and who they will one day be called to stand before and give an account. Remember that it is appointed for all men once to die, and then the judgment (Hebrew 9:27).

God gives everyone the opportunity to receive Him. He said “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears and heeds my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will eat with him, and he will eat with me.” (Revelation 3:20).

Friend, if you have not yet opened the door to Him, do so today. There is security in opening the door to Him. When you receive Him the Bible says your name will go down in the Lambs Book of Life so that on that day when the roll is called up yonder, you will be amongst the righteous. Don’t be like the rich man who refused to hear the voice of God on this side of eternity and was cut off, separated from God.

“Today, if you hear His voice, harden not your heart” (Hebrews 4:7).
